A narrative account by Own Chase, first mate of the ill-fated ship. On the morning of November 20, 1820, the Nantucket whaler Essex, in the Pacific Ocean, was rammed twice by an enraged sperm whale and slowly began sinking. Her crew of 20 had time only to collect some bread, water, and a few possesions before pulling away in 3 frail open boats without charts and thousands of miles from any known land. There followed 90 days of privation and suffering on the wide sea. Of the crew, only 8 men are known to have survived. One of them was Owen Chase, whose account of the long and perilous journey has become a classic document. Herman Melville drew on Chase’s narrative when he wrote Moby Dick. This is an edited version with a prologue and epilogue to give historical perspective.
