Description 1st ED. 254pp. 28 b/w plates & 4 illus. book and dj vg cond. This is the story of the Reverend George Garrett (1852-1902), Curate of Moss Side, near Mancheter who invented the first practical British submarine, and the first in the world to be mechanically powered when submerged. The submarine was the Resurgam, (I shall arise), and was an attempt at underwater steam propulsion 80 years before nuclear submarines made it common place. She foundered in Cowyn Bay in February 1880.
